It looks like your program is a full immersion English program. What is your student population like?

I suspect that your students are mostly native Spanish speakers who are learning English through several subjects while also learning Spanish language arts? What ages are you teaching, and what is the language distribution in each grade level?

I have had a great deal of experience with visualitzation in the teaching of ELL students. In the Rigby program On Our Way To English, there are some great visual tools in their manipulative charts and also for teaching content area information. It is also found in the way reading strategies are taught using visual representations. More information may be found at http://rigby.harcourtachieve.com/en-US/owe_home.htm. Isabel Beck and Margaret McKeown have written a wonderful vocabulary program for Steck Vaughn called Elements of Reading Vocabulary. In it are visual representations of hundreds of key tier 2 vocabulary words. You may find more information at http://steckvaughn.harcourtachieve.com/en-US/eor_home. Click on the vocabulary link. I have also developed an audio workshop on the teaching of vocabulary including information on how to use visual representation using Beck's methodology. My book It's All About Words: Literacy Instruction in the Classroom also contains information about using graphic organizers as well as creating visual representations. My Schema Cards CD is a collection of some 50 images for American History and general vocabulary that may be used. These 50 images are proprietary images created by my daughter and myself. They may be used on white boards or printed out as desired. You may find more information about these at www.woweducationalconsulting.com. I also believe that using video will greatly enhance the experience of students in the classroom. On the myspace sight for Words of Wisdom Educational Consulting, I have linked up with National Geographic and the BBC to provide videos that may help with virtual experiences in the classroom. Check that out at www.myspace.com/wowedu.

HI everyone!

I hope that the new year and new term are off to a great start :)

I have been asked to contribute ideas to a Bilingual Learning Blog that has just been set up by Edelvives. There's not a lot on the site (yet) but they will uploading new ideas, suggestions, activities every week.

Feel free to check out the site, leave comments or make suggestions on the type of material/articles etc. you'd like to see. Go to: http://www.sehacesaber.org/?mod=blog2&edad=0&idioma=1&s...
then click on 'Bilingual Learning' in the left hand column.

Another site that I came across a while ago and where I've found some useful ideas and resources is the Internet Public Library: http://www.ipl.org/div/kidspace/
Great links to activities for Art, Music, Health, Maths, Science and Computer Studies.

Bye for now,
nina
