I also believe that we have to teach more than content. We need to make language alive in the classroom and connect it to the outside world in terms of cultural expectations and tendencies. I do it in my writing class when telling my international students that they must get to the point and economize on words because Americans expect linear kind of thinking in both oral and written communication.
