Focus on...
Sources of Energy

Dear CLIL colleagues,

Energy. It makes our world go round and our lives run that little bit more comfortably. However, how much do we really understand it?

This month we are looking at the idea of "energy" and the sources from which it is obtained. Onestopclil offers a huge range of resources to help students successfully communicate their ideas on this topic.

Energy - making things workCLIL Energy

Ever thought about the different types of energy that we have? Bring the topic to life for your students through these wonderful animations from the Science Museum in London which teach students about the energy that powers everything from their computer to the bus or car that transports them to class. Featuring narrated illustrations and diagrams on a host of energy-related topics including Geothermal Power, Wind Power, Solar Power, Hydro Power and Tidal Power these animations are ideal for use on interactive whiteboards or class computers.

Energy Images - learning visually

Categorised and clearly labelled, these illustrations and diagrams are perfect for displaying on classroom walls or projecting at the front of a class. Why not create an energy picture dictionary with students and add their own diagrams, or use the energy images to create tests, games or labelling activities?

Activities and resources

Cleverly designed speaking activities such as energy focused question-loops will keep your students tuned into the topic while grammar focused energy worksheets will help them with the sometimes difficult area of countable and uncountable nouns. Find out how a light bulb works, how boats move through water and what happens during evaporation, with a whole selection of picture-labelling activities, gap-fill exercises, class experiments and group work activities in the Young Learners section of the site dedicated to energy.

The vocabulary of energy

One of the challenges for CLIL students is getting to grips with the large number of unfamiliar, subject-specific words. Onestopclil offers accessible illustrated vocabulary worksheets perfect for supplementing a CLIL lesson on energy. Illustrating terms such as "charge", "gravity" and "force" these activities and reference sheets will encourage and aid students to use new vocabulary like native speakers.

Fully editable wordlists also provide students with definitions or an example sentence, making their meaning even clearer. There is also space for translations and personalised example sentences.

As always, we love to hear from you, so please let us know what you think of the site and get involved in the CLIL community.

Reading and listening

The Intro to... Chemistry and Physics resources are engaging MP3 listening and reading CLIL lessons that help students to understand different scientific disciplines, the history behind them and key issues on the topic. Containing pre-listening warmers, two listening activities, pronunciation guides for difficult terms, texts, speaking and writing tasks and colour illustrations, these materials will be sure to engage your students and develop their scientific awareness.

Lesson Share

This thought-provoking environmental lesson focuses on "Earth Hour", an initiative encouraging households and businesses to turn off non-essential electrical appliances. This fantastic resource submitted by Mateusz Byrski was one of the winners of a previous lesson share competition. Share your CLIL lessons with us and have your ideas published on onestopclil.
